Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), also known as neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or electro-myo-stimulation, is a system that elicits a muscle contraction using electrical impulses which directly stimulate your motor neurons. An EMS unit, such as our Biojacket, is a device that delivers just that. This stimulation creates muscle contractions that can be quick and frequent or long and slow with adjustable intensity, targeting all major muscle groups at once.
Typically, the body fires signals to the muscles by sending electrical impulses from the brain through the central nervous system. However, using an EMS device allows the body to engage in intense and complete muscular contractions without activating neurons or putting any stress on the central nervous system.
The completely mind-blowing fact is that the body doesn’t recognize the difference between a neurological voluntary impulse and an electrically stimulated one and reacts by contracting in the same manner.
A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning investigated whether EMS could help elite athletes gain a performance edge. During the study, researchers gave a team of soccer players suits fitted with EMS technology, half of the players ran drills for 30 minutes with the suit on, the other half ran them normally without the suits. After just 30 minutes of training, the players who wore the suits had significant advancement in muscle fiber reparation, growth, loss of fat, and endurance post workout. At the conclusion of that study, the researchers stated that “EMS offers a promising alternative to traditional strength training for enhancing the strength parameters and motor abilities in athletes.”
